Export Control
Export Control, Sanctions and Embargoes
At universities, personal exchange and the exchange of knowledge, research data and materials with international partners is a central component of academic life. The University of Zurich cooperates with international partner institutions and scientists in various areas and thus participates in foreign trade in numerous fields of activity. This is subject to the provisions of export controls, sanctions and embargoes. The fields of activity include, in particular, the transfer of goods and technologies (information and knowledge), the exchange of persons and financial flows. The constitutionally guaranteed freedom of science does not exempt from compliance with prohibitions or restrictions defined by law or regulation concerning the dissemination of certain goods and technologies, as well as certain financial measures.
The aim of export control is not to restrict research or censor its results, but solely to prevent its misuse. This creates a secure basis for the desired freedom of research and promotion of innovation of new technologies in the individual research groups.
